Iowa Governor Terry Branstad has signed into law sweeping education reforms. According to the Des Monies Register the bill would end social promotion for third graders by requiring they take an extensive exam if they fail a state literacy test or repeat the 3rd grade.

Nearly 70% of New Jersey voters support a scholarship tax credit program for students from low-income families, according to survey results released earlier this week by the American Federation for Children (AFC)—the nation’s voice for school choice—and the Hispanic Council for Reform and Educational Options (HCREO).

Gov. Jan Brewer signed into law yesterday the expansion of an Arizona school choice program, explicitly making children of active military members eligible to participate - a first nationwide. The expansion of the Empowerment Scholarship Accounts program also makes students in failing public schools or school districts and those adopted out of the state foster care system eligible starting in the 2013-14 school year.

The Florida State Board of Education has overturned a Volusia County School Board decision that would have banned the creation of a virtual charter school. According to the Daytona Beach News Journal the school board objected to the governance model of the charter school. However state officials said the school was in full compliance with state rules and there was no reason to deny the application.

A new survey by the Friedman Foundation for Education Choice finds that nearly 3/4ths of all moms think vouchers are good for getting kids the best education possible.
